Mine was similarly hot. On mine the thermal paste application was very bad - lots of air pockets. You need to put 1/2 grain of rice in as5 on the GPU die. Then spread it around with your finger in a plastic bag. But be careful not to get it on the resitors round the outside of the die. And also make sure the white sticky thermal pads do not move or come de-attatched.

I dont know what AMD/ATI were thinking then they designed the heatsink

I replaced my old 7600gt's thermalpaste before... im guessing what i did that time is really similar because 7600gt is naked core too

I got the ASUS EAH4850 and i have the same prob as yours... Temps reached 108 :S. The only thing u can do is buy an aftermarket cooler.. OR w8 until Asus releases a new bios update. The other companies did it (MSI, etc) ANd they are working fine. Hope this helps

I am aware of the heat problems with the HD4850 and the only two suggestions would be to get 1. an aftermarket cooler or 2. get a version that comes stock with non-reference cooling.

It will technically void your warranty, yes. But they won't check or do chemical analysis of the thermal paste if you do have to RMA it. So providing you don't mangle the screws or scratch the PCB they should be non the wiser. BTW its preferable to not use AS5 on exposed dies as it can be a shorting hazard - Arctic cooling MX-2 or OCZ freeze would be good, but any cheap white thermal grease would also be fine. Make sure you don't damage the gauze pads on the memory and VRMs when you remove the stock heatsink.
