OK, so I'm in the process of reinstalling everything after a hard disk crash - and I am quite concerned about my load temps for my 4850. I'm currently using stock cooling - and will be switching to an aftermarket cooler shortly, but that doesn't help my current situation. I'll explain below.
__________________While reinstalling windows (after a hard disk crash), I had to leave the stock fan at whatever terrible default setting it is at, which, needless to say, kept my card incredibly hot. In fact, it was so hot at one point that I smelled burning plastic... Have I done irreversible damage to the card? I plopped a small vornado style fan in front of it, and opened all the windows to let in some nice freezing temperatures, so I did manage to cool it somewhat, but my concern is now the loading temperatures in general. I've hit 86+ C while loading, before the SmartDoc (Asus card - Asus software for fan control) kicks in and cools it down to 40-50C. I'm thinking my temperatures are on the higher side, especially considering its at stock atm. Recently I messed up installing the video drivers, and so have to do a driver clean and reinstall all the video software again (CCC and SmartDoc, etc.) This will be considerable time with the fan on minimal stock, and am worried about burning it (again). I recall seeing in the earlier release days a couple of threads about being able to pull some wire so the fan defaults to 100% permanently. Since my fan basically sits at 100% anyways when the computer is on, I've been trying to find these threads, but since its late, and I've been working on restoring my system for about 12 hours now - is anyone able to point me in the right direction? I seem to have failed at using the search tool, and have so far found mostly threads about aftermarket cooling or the profile mod thing (which if I understand correctly works only after CCC loads up - which is how mine is already). Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks ~TkH

download rivatuner 2.11 and max out the fans, take off the unused pci slot covers and zip-tie some 80mm fans to it, it dropped my 8800GT temps by like 20c

Thanks for the advice - although I'm not sure if it will help much in this situation... I'll try rivatuner - although doesn't rivatuner need to be on or loaded before it kicks in with fan speed adjustments? Because if so, I already have programs that do that just fine. If not, forgive my ignorance, I will go download it and try it out though. Um, as for strapping fans to it, I'd rather spend the additional 20 bucks and get a proper aftermarket cooler. Thanks for the advice though.

Any help would be much appreciated, in the meantime perhaps I'll get lucky with the search tool - I've been failing at it so far, hehe. ~TkH

Just get an Accelero S1 - Its cheap and brought my load temps down to 52*C. Or you could just reapply the thermal paste on the stock cooler (applcation looked really bad on mine)
Also I used to get 92*C load temps in a well ventilated case on the stock cooler.

Thanks for the replies. I am planning on getting an aftermarket cooler.
__________________However, I would like to be able to use my PC before I wait for one to arrive. That said, I need to reinstall my drivers, etc, without melting my card. This means I am looking for the old mod that used to be posted on these boards which involved removing a wire so that the fan was permanently on 100%. Rivatuner, the profile hotfix, and CCC 8.10 will not do this, as they all kick in after windows starts. Anyone able to help out? ~TkH
