will a 4870 run ok without memory cooling

Should be sweet, but it would be better if it had them. My mate recently brought an ASUS 4870, when he put aftermaket cooling on it we found it had none, its been running sweet without them for awhile now so there not uber important, but safe>sorry.

I remember reading a thread where someone had bought an aftermarket cooler that didn't come with ram-sinks and he was experiencing trouble. I'd play it safer than sorry, especially if you are overclocking, I have heard that GDDR5 gets hot.

i have a non reference design with stock mosfet cooling

I just hack sawed the mem sink off of the stock cooler, on my 4850, that is.

Its fine without sinks, gDDR5 runs at fairly low voltage and does not really need sinks. That said, it certainly gives me peace of mind to put them on, and BGA sinks are quite cheap.

Those wont fit with a stock cooler, the stock cooler normally covers all those components up.
TBH for the price that does not look that great either, the enzotech mosfet sinks will do a much better job cooling the VRMs. Some cheap thermaltake BGA sinks or something will do great for the gDDR5 chips as well.
