hi
__________________i have this nice mr. R9550-256CDT http://www.abit.com.tw/page/en/vga/v...E=R9550-256CDT with four of this ddr ram chip on each side HY5DU561622CT-4 http://www.hynix.com/inc/pdfDownload...m/down/DDR.pdf and to save your time it says that the ram can work at 250Mhz@3-4-4. now the stock clock is 196Mhz, and i don't know why this number is magical... there are many cards from different manufacturers using the same gpu with a similar ram size and clocks-don't know about the ram manufacturer for each though. using atitool i get high clocks for the gpu with stock heatsink easily, but the ram is stubborn on it's underclocks...i simply cannot even get it to 230Mhz. it overheats so fast and the system hangs up. now with all that said there are two questions; 1. could the ram ever be "overclocked" to even it's normal clock? 2. is a heatsink for the ram chips of any use? thanx

I can help with question #2. Electronic components run best at low temps. So if it's hot, it will work better cool. If it is indeed overheating, increase the cooling.

Why is it smoking?

1. Yes, most DDR2 RAM over 800Mhz is actually binned and factory OC'd 800Mhz chips, that's why they don't auto-detect at the proper speed. 2. Yes, ramsinks do help keep RAM chips cooler and more stable.
