After buying a Sapphire Hd4850 I decided to fit it with a Vf900cu cooler I had lying around Which was previously mounted on my old backup card (an X1650 XT)
The idle temps look okay, with the DispIO at 36*c MemIO at 46*c and Shadercore at 38*c. I know I'd be doing a lot worse if I had a stock single slot cooler. Under load however the MemIO tops out at 78*c and that's with a 20*c room temperature, with dispIO and Shader running at 65-70*c. It's winter now, during summer room temperature can go up to 35*c Does this sound about right for a 4850 equipped with a Vf900cu? I re-installed it several times with varying amounts of AS5 and always getting roughly the same results. Should I be able to do better? Or is it worth it to switch to an Accelero S1 rev. 2 with a 120mm attached? I was planning to overclock my card. (Though I'm worried about my E4600 being a possible bottleneck with it's 2mb cache.) As far as case airflow goes, I've got a Centurion 5 with a 80mm 1300 rpm in front, a 1200rpm 120mm in the back and an 80mm 1200rpm in the side (which is pointed at the graphics card, roughly.)

Take off the side panel of your case, wait 30 minutes, then see what your temps are. That will tell you if your case has no airflow.

4850's produce a lot of heat, your proccy won't be a problem but for overclocking you will need a better cooler.

Do you have the vram sinked?
__________________I had an 8800GT with a VF900 and the vram usually ran 8c less than the core sinked something like this: ![]() I switched to these which gave the same results:

Thx for the replies,
First off, removing the side panel makes about 2*c difference under load and almost none while idle. I take it this means my airflow isn't that bad. Second, I used those Zalman VRam heat sinks that came with the vf900cu, though I don't know if they make a measurable difference as the MemIO temp sensor is located on the Gpu die. The thing is a good while ago I heard that the Vf900cu gets easily saturated under load. This seems plausible as it's not a particularly large heat sink. Any thoughts on that? And as it stands now I've got my eye on the Accelero S1 Rev. 2 with a nice and quiet 120mm on it.

Hey average, what sapphire board do you have and did you check the temps on the stock cooler that came with it?

I got the Sapphire Hd4850 512 Dual Slot cooler.
http://www.sapphiretech.com/us/produ...gpid=249&grp=3 The temps were okay, better than a single slot cooler. But the vf900 is providing slightly better temps. It's about a 5 to 10*c difference.

Zalman is getting lazy lately. They're not coming out any new vga coolers for the X2 and their current HSF are not up to the job cooling the hotter chips.

Minor update: I bought the AC Accellero Twin Turbo heatsink. It was the same price as an accellero S1 rev 2 + decent 120mm fan. But I've hit a snag.
The sapphire Hd4850 I have is a relatively short card. It's not as long as other 4850's. It's one of the reasons I bought that particular card. The Accellero TT however significantly extends the length of my card. I will either have to remove my 2nd harddrive which I use to backup files, or get a longer case.
