Since we have the same cards....does yours ever wind up for no reason, even at idle for 2 -3 seconds then back to normal?

I believe that is a bug in all the 4870 series. Mine has only done it once, but it is a common thing. If you were to flash a custom BIOS using RBE, it has the option to fix it.

I'm surprised you didn't get more temperature drop. I did the same thing with my reference 4850 with IC7 and it dropped that thing 15-20 degrees.

Maybe there was a problem with the way your cooler was seated? ^

IEATFISH: I ran Unreal 3/Fallout 3 to test for temps. At 65% it keeps everything in the 70's. I used GPU-Z to monitor temps (log). Which is pretty ****ty considering the noise it makes lol.....had to wear my ATH-700's headphones to eliminate that. I've got 6 120mm fans in my case running at 1000RPM ~, ambient temps where probably 23-24°c.

Yeah, something was weird with my stock cooler I think. I now have a TRad2 and it keeps my card idling in the 40's and loads in the 60's. I'm very satisfied.
