Default 4870 1GB Heatsink Reseat

My temps on my 4870 have been up idling in the 50C's and load in the 70C's. I've been a bit jaded by my 4850 with a DuOrb that never went above 45C and I know that these graphics cards can handle the heat.

My question is if I were to remove the stock heatsink, which uses those thermal pads, and replaced them with AS5, would I see any drop in temps? Also, will the heatsink sit right on the chips or will the lack of thermal tape leave a gap?

This is my card.

Nope, don't worry you will see a drop with the new thermal paste and a reseat, I'd buy a DuOrb for it personally though.

Okay, so when the pads are removed, there is about a millimeter gap between the memory chips and heatsink so I have to use the pads. I did replace the GPU paste with AS5 however.

How are your temps now?

I get about the same temps as you, we have the same card. On auto wit 8.12 CCC's it will idle in the 50s load in the 70s as well. I have 6 120mm case fans, but they are all low speed 1000 rpm ~ fans.

I wonder if you would get better temps with the plastic cover off. Would you be able to test that?

No, I'm not going to do too much. I've noticed about a 3-4C drop since I put on AS5, but the hot part of the card is the Ram chips. They get up to 90C sometimes. I just wish I didn't have to use those pads...

No dout man, I seen mine hit 82 and was like ****! And I bet they have been higher because ATi tool keeps freezing up on me and I can't test it to the max. I used another program called Video Card Stability Test and it was hittin 82/84.

I might take the cover off and test it, because if the core is cooler then so will the ram because its all on the same heatsink right? Whats safe for GDDR5, do you know?

I might eventually get the Arctic Cooling Accelero Twin Turbo....

According to w1zzard the vram temps are not of the actual chips.
They are of the memory controller integrated in the core.

Does that mean the temp doesn't matter? Or does that just mean I have no idea what my ram temps are?

The latter
You should try reseating if the temps are more than 10°c > core.

I had good temps on my stock cooler.
