Well I am assuming (and assuming is a bad word) that maybe the card was just faulty so it was giving you so much heat? The VRM's should be the same or about the same by using the stock plate and a aftermarket cooler (correct me if I am wrong) Only real thing that the aftermarket cooler seems to do is cool the actual GPU down.

And sometimes I wish I would have gotten that 275 card instead, but I really wanted to CF in the future. I loved ATI forever till I got my 8800gt then I fell in love with nvidia. But ATI is always been good so I went with them. Only problem I have is VRM's so dang hot. Hopefully that Thermalright VRM cooler will come out soon! Anyone hear a release date for it yet?

Eh who knows, I just picked up a killer deal on a GTX 260 at dell.com, 216 SP version for 130$ after rebate

I've played both sides and I've had numerous cards from both ati and nvidia, but I'll be going with nvidia this time. Too many headaches from fiddling with the vrm

Mind taking a few pictures of your presumably dead 4890? I want to see how the Zalman VRM heatsink looks like on the card.

Black screen from overclocking doesn't necessarily mean the card is dead. It just needs time to completely cool off and you can boot again.

If it still doesn't show anything after cooling off completely then it's probably a goner. Video cards rarely die unless pushed to the limit for extended periods of time.

As you can see from this thread of mine my VRMs shot up to 132C for brief period of time and was still OK (computer blue screened and rebooted).

who knows, maybe i had a defective card..because i shouldn't be getting 110c VRM temperatures with the stock plate on

atleast newegg is fast with their rma's

i'm probably just gonna replace the stock TIM and leave it, i won't bother with an aftermarket cooler

That's the egg for you . Knowing that they are very cooperative like that is one of the reasons I buy from them.
