Default 4850 Advice: Clean your cooler!

MY 4850 was running really hot lately, f@h would put it at about 100C, and that's with the fan at 100%. I took apart the cooler (Stock reference), and noticed HUGE chunks of lint and dust built up between the fan and the metal fins, blocking airflow. This dust buildup was not visible with the red plastic shroud covering the heatsink. I took out the dust, put a dab of AS5 on the core, and now I run 58C while folding! That's about a 40 degree difference!

So just giving 4850 users here a bit of advice, make sure to keep your cooler clean!

It is true. Especially with the closed cooler designs. Dust can get in there and you won't even see it. This goes for any heatsink. Keep them clean and they'll love you for it.

When I had my 4850 that thing would just get caked with dog hair and dust. After a couple months of having it and forgetting to clean it out, I pulled out a 3" long, almost solid, piece of dust that was blocking pretty all airflow going through the heatsink. Temps went from 90c in game to 60c O_O

is your case elevated or on the floor?

my case is on my desk which is about 3 feet and my cats always hop up there and lay RIGHT in front of my intake fans...

Even with 3 layers of dust filters, one year of use and my 4850 had chunks of dust in it too.

I have this exact problem right now with my stock heatsink on my video card couldn't figure out why my temps used to be like 65-70c under load @ 40-50% fan speed to 100c under load with F@H with fan speed @ 100%.

I recently emailed VisionTek for an RMA request but after viewing this thread I think I know why my card runs so hot now. Do I just take the heatsink off the card and spray it down with some compressed air can at the fan?

I would love to keep this card until the 5800 series cards or GT300!

AS5(or any other good TIM) also drops load temps considerably when comparing it to the stock cooler.

You dont have to take your card apart to clean it. Simply blow the compressed through the cooler backwards and watch all that crap come flying out the fan inlet. Then look through it. If you can see light through each set of fins then its clean enough to cool.

Also, if you guys actually vacuum regularly with a good vacuum cleaner like a dyson then the dust hardly ever forms. With my kids making messes all the time I vacuum at least 3 times a week. Since I started doing that, lint is hardly ever an issue anymore.

i just wash it out with 99% Isopropyl alcohol. When i was still using my stock cooler, the collected dust did raise temps by 40 degrees and i was about to rma it. luckily i didn't .
