Default Radeon HD 4870 Cooling Results

I recently got a set of Iandh's heatsinks (which are awesome) and an Arctic Cooling Twin Turbo and put it on my Visiontek Radeon HD 4870. I used Arctic Cooling Alumina for the RAM and VRM and Arctic Silver 5 for the main GPU. I used 3dmark and Furmark as my torture tests, and GPU-Z and Everest as my temps.

I was very pleased with the results and I will post pics later, as I had to bulk up the VRM sinks a bit to make sure they were cool. Essentially I took the Twin Turbo sinks and mounted them on the Iandh ones.

Stock Cooling Temps:

GPU Core (DispIO) - 76 Idle to 88 Load
Memory (MemIO) - 88 Idle to 98 Load
Shaders - 78 Idle to 93 Load
VRM - 64 Idle to 126 Load (I'm surprised they didn't freakin melt!)

Twin Turbo + Iandh 4870 Sinks:

GPU Core (DispIO) - 39 Idle to 64 Load
Memory (MemIO) - 53 Idle to 78 Load
Shaders - 44 Idle to 74 Load
VRM - 47 Idle to 90 Load

Note: Using Furmark, my VRM tops out at 112, but that is the only program that goes higher than 90, so I consider it an inaccurate representation of 'full load'.

EDIT: Two things, 1rst, I think this might be in the wrong section, pardon my n00biness and 2nd, I was wondering if these temps are low, med, or high. Thanks

It looks alright, but I expected better temps with that cooler.

Yeah. Well my ambient was pretty high compared to normal (84F out, 92F+ in my room.), all the heat in my house travels up to my room and gets stuck. Sometimes 15F more than downstairs. I'll see if fixing my airflow and moving to a cooler area does anything.

gpu temp is low

memory/shader is medium
and vrm is medium (it is supposedly able to go up to 109c or something like that)

i have the twin turbo and get the same temps as you...i just need to find a good VRM/memory cooling solution because in Crysis my temps were through the roofs on those, while my GPU stayed cool at 64c

I use the Iandh heatsinks, which give just enough room to stick the Twin Turbo heatsinks on the sides of it. Also, I cover the chips next to the VRMs and they touch the fins of the Turbo. Increasing the area this way, for me, has lowered the VRMs significantly.

Today I retested after letting my TIM set in and I fixed a broken case fan. New temps:

DispIO - 33 Idle to 58 Load
MemIO - 46 Idle to 74 Load
Shaders - 37 Idle to 67 Load
VRM - 34 Idle to 89 Load

The difference between these and the previous temps is 1: cooler day today, closer to average temps and 2: more heatsinks brought the VRMs from 112 on Furmark to 93, Crysis brings it to about 80's after a good two hours playing 1680x1050 very high.

Please do, I never even knew that existed! Looks like it would be efficient.

I've already spent around $70-$80 cooling this thing (25 for Iandh Sink, 35 for Twin Turbo, 10 for AS5 and Alumina, and X for shipping). I'm not gonna throw away more money lol.

PS: What do you mean while it lasted? Bought a new card?

Your load temps are 10C higher than mine, and I'm running a 4890 OC'ed with a Scythe Musashi.

I've heard that the 4890s run cooler than the 4870s even on stock. Either way, those load temps are after an hour of Furmark on 1680x1050 and the post-processing. I've heard it drives the Radeons nuts temp-wise. I usually get 10-15c lower playing Crysis. Everything else I have doesn' t bring it to 100% (mostly valve stuff)
