Pretty much every review of the 4870 has idle sitting at 60 degrees. There is no way you're using the reference cooler unless you're living in like antarctica with a large fan blowing frigid air right on the heatsink.

and many more.

So please, I would love to know what you did to get the reference cooler to perform as well as a T-RAD2.

Well the reviews were all done with the stock fan profile, the 4870 fan was set at 28%.
That is why you see those ridiculous temps.
I even tried the VF1000 on my 4870 and the temps were worse, so I went back to the reference cooler.

You can see here where I did the swap, and also how the temps improved after I reinstalled the reference cooler.

You need to reseat your cooler.
Also what is your ambient temp?
Mine is always 22-26°c

Wow then from now I am never, ever buying an XFX card again. Ever. My cooler looks stock, but it isn't. I knew they cheaped out by combining the ram and vrm plate with the cooler itself, but at 55% fan speed on mine at stock settings, similar ambient, my idle temps are 63C and load temps are well over 95C. At 60% its also louder than my Ultra Kaze.

I went with XFX over Asus because I figured that XFX is a better brand. My first one was defective and it seems the stock cooler is absolute garbage.

You could try pulling the shroud and attaching a powerful 92mm fan to the sink, probably cool better and be quieter.

Have you tried a reseat yet?

Do you have a newer revision?
Mine were earlier revision(first month), both my Visiontek and Sapphire ran about the same temps.

These temps are during a Vantage run.

0 is the 4870
1&2 4870X2
55% fan speed on both.

I have the new reversion. I had my Twin Turbo and with it 100% my Temps were about 70C under load and with stock Sapphire Cooler @ 100% is at 85C. The weird thing is that my old 4850 i had it @ 860Mhz @ 1.35v much more then 4870 has 750Mhz with 1.26v and that did not pass 55C with Twin Turbo. Maybe this new cards have bad sensor or are just badly made.

I'm guessing they cheaped out on the cooler, I'm trying to find pics of how many heat pipes mine had.
