Hi,
I've recently replaced the stock cooler on my 4850 X2 with the Thermalright V2 and HR-03 Rev.A as suggested on the Thermalright website. I initially installed the heatsinks without fans but was getting terrible temps - 120 degrees C on the first GPU and 75 on the second idle. (that's with stocks speeds - no OC'ing..) After that I installed an Akasa Amber (1800rpm) fan on each heatsink. That helped a bit but my temps are still very high - 73C on the first GPU and 55C on the second idle. Something definitely can't be right as I've seen a number of posts from people with the same setup saying they're getting around 45C idle with the Thermalright V2.. Under load I've seen these go up to over 110C on the first and 70C on the second. Playing COD4, the card actually shuts itself off after around 10 mins of play. I'm really at my wit's end with this thing. I've pulled the card in and out so many times and messed around with it so much I'm surprised it still even works! I've tried using the Thermalright thermal paste that came with the heatsinks; I've tried using Arctic Silver 5; I've reseated each heatsink at least 5 times (with different amounts of tightness)... But nothing does any good! I don't think it's the airflow in my case as I have an Akasa Mirage (large case with good airflow) and the passively cooled Nvidia 7800 I had in there previously ran very cool. I would really, really appreciate any advice you can give me as I've just about had enough! ![]() Thanks |

For anyone interested:
After reseating a few more times and then applying AS5 I eventually realised that the fans were hooked up to the wrong cables and were sucking air into the heatsinks rather than blowing it out.. (yep, stupid me!) After reversing the cables and also removing a few backplates to allow air to leave the case more easily my temps are looking a fair bit better: Idle - GPU1: 52C GPU2: 42C Load (non-crossfire) - GPU1: 77C At some point I might clean the first GPU off with rubbing alcohol and reapply the AS5 (I've only been wiping the GPUs down with paper towel so far) but who knows if it'll make much difference.. I'm pretty happy with the temps now anyways.. |

What were the temps for the reference cooler? Haha, looks like you answered your own question!

I thought the Thermalright coolers would be at least as good as this but doesn't look like it.. Oh well, at least it's a *lot* quieter than the stock cooler.. |
