Default Who says RAM doesn't need cooling? (And cooler help as well)

For all you naysayers as to whether RAM needs cooling or not, my powercolor HD4890 just died as the RAM wasn't cooled and overheated, 10 mins after it died and its still hot, windows won't boot, etc with it like this either.

No overclocks, either.

Anyway, when I get a new one from RMA, what would be the best (Cheap) cooler I can get? I was thinking a T-Rad2, do those 12mm thin 100mm Scythe fans fit on there?

LOL. Your video card VRAM is getting cooled. Via Thermal tape

Prob the only reason your card died because you didn't have the fan speed set at a higher speed, which resulted everything overheating

Nah, this was with no cooling at all, bare chips.

It was hot enough to burn my finger about 10 minutes after I pulled it out of the machine.. Surprised it lasted as long as it did.

It was This card, it came from factory with no RAM cooling at all.

the people that say vram doesnt need cooling would only be on cards that under stock configs, not have ram cooling.

However, your 4890 has GDDR5 ram, which will require cooling, and should cooled by the stock heatsink, which they are contacted to the heatsink via thermal tape.

Hmm.. just bare chips on my 4650 too and I have the memory OC'd as far as it'll go. Should I be worried? Or will it be ok 'cause it's a mainstream card?

IF THAT WAS TRUE.
You had a malfunctioning card.
Perhaps a resistor gave out.

Whatever the case - THAT ISNT NORMAL.
And it explains why the card died.
