So after 15 mins of left4dead and 20 mins of COD4 back to back my 4870 is staying under 50c...i thought i would have to keep the fan at around 80%...no...and its still daytime so my room will get another 5c cooler later on tonight if not more...
And to think i was buying into the paranoia that my 4870 would be hell to keep cool... Iv yet to fully stress the card but i don't see it getting much hotter than this... On another note this card moves a hell of alot more air than my 260GTX...an imo at 80% fan speed its just as quiet as my 260 was at 60%...this card without being downclocked idles at 40c and below...im sure i can get it down to 35c and lower if i cut the clock....overall im impressed with the switch from my MSI 260GTX to this...except i still have EDID problems with my LG 22" so no hdmi unless i find a hack of some sort

Not really sure what you're asking, but no, that isn't hot. Graphics cards can take a lot more heat than CPUs can, I ran my 8600 GT at 105*c without issue, but I wouldn't suggest that if you actually like the card
Assuming it's the reference cooler, it must be loud at 80%, you could back that down a lot without any issue. On third read, I realise you aren't actualy asking anything. Carry on

Yeap just stating that im not sure what all the hubub was about with ati cards running significantly hotter so thats why i mentioned "XFX 4870 hot?" don't worry iv already versed myself in ati's safe load temps on the 4870....it would seem il be able to keep the fan speed at 60% and probably a little lower at night...either way this card is no different than my 260GTX and il definitely have to start doing some overclocking soon...
I was a bit worried this card would run extremely hot after hearing some of the newegg reviews and i pm'd a few XFX 4870 owners here and they had heat issues as well...guess im just lucky

I run my XXX's @ 55% fan speed and they stay ~49*C and load at no more than 62*C.
I think the reason people were saying that stuff about the XXX4870's is due to their kind of crappy BIOS that waits until the card will be damn near on fire before the fan is instigated to move any real amount of air. When i leave the fan on auto, my cards will IDLE @ 72*C. I know thats not that hot, but it's too hot for my liking. I try to keep my GPU's below 65*C, regardless if they're ATi or Nvidia.

![]() Have you noticed how much air the 4870 moves? compared to my MSI 260GTX the 4870 is like a freaking leaf blower...even with the air it pushes its extremely quiet though ..I love my new card....

My 2 4870's @ 55% are louder than 4 9600 GSO's folding @ 100%. But they move so much more air. The fans are more efficient at cooling, but sacrifice dB level. I'm ok with that as they're not super loud, maybe if I put the side panel back on they'd quiet down a bit more. ![]() They are great cards though. There isn't a game out right now that I can't play at a very good frame rate totally maxed out. I just wish November would hurry up and get here so I can get my AM3 rig.

Ha yeah im sure your about due for an upgrade from that opty
![]() The card can be as loud as it wants in my case...with a house fan running and an A/C no more than 10 feet from me its not about to be a noticeable ![]() With my 16x/16x crossfire board coming in next week i might have to look into another 4870...would be sweet to have crossfire

![]() I'm thinking of going with a 710 and that DFI ATX board. But if there's a smokin deal on something better, I'm sure I'll wind up getting that.
