TBH, I think part of the difference is that I'm using more Watts (102W) and pulling more Amps (~75A) than you, I think that's where our temperature differences are. IDK why I am, unless you are running just stock clocks of 850/975 @ 1.312V compared to the OC I'm running of 925/1100 @ 1.375V. That would be the only thing I can think of as to the significant temperature differences we are showing.

I'll go ahead and pull the T-Rad2 off my 4890 and check the heatsink base for level and smoothness. Obviously, I'll probably go ahead and lap it since Thermalright heatsinks aren't exactly known for being level (especially the TRUE), that should buy me a few degrees C.

D'oh! I completely forgot to try and match your overclock. I wasn't doing it at stock clocks, but it was stock voltage. My overclock was 900/1000 for my test. I've done tests at 960/1100 (again stock volts, I might have a decent overclocker) before, and while it didn't crash or have any artifacts, I was only able to use Furmark with that overclock for 8 minutes or so before my VRMs started getting uncomfortably hot for my tastes. My GPU was like 62-63, whereas my VRMs were around ~110C, hence my interest in the VRM cooler ).

I'll try it at higher clocks/voltages tomorrow and let you know.

Yeah if your T-Rad2 is at all like mine, the surface will have a very rough texture to it, I wish I had tested the differences between unlapped and lapped but I was so skeptical of the surface it got lapped before I put it on this card (I put it on my first 4890 but it had to be RMA'd, so I lapped it while waiting for a new card).

Ok, I did another test, this time properly copying your voltage and clocks. I also bumped up my processor another 200 Mhz, which apparently removed the bottleneck on my GPU since this time the test loaded my GPU 100% instead of 98% (at least that's my guess - I don't know much about bottlenecking). My ambient was a bit lower today though - around 23-24C.

Still, my GPU never got hotter than 61C. However, it is interesting to note that despite using the same clocks and voltage (1.375) as you, my card never pulled more than 70.5 amps compared to your ~75 amps...it's possible I just have a better quality card than yours. But that still wouldn't explain why your GPU is so much hotter.

Hmm, dunno what else to say, except to again say good luck getting it sorted out!

By the looks of your image, I'm generating 10W more than you and if I remember my heat transfer & fluid flow class in the Navy correctly, that may be where my ~10C difference with you is coming from along with the fact you lapped yours and I haven't .

I'd have to agree with you on the card quality, I kinda figured out about 2 months after I got it that I didn't have all that great of a card. Big issues with clocks/voltages being fine & stable one month and suddenly not being any good the next, excessive voltage for just a ~10% OC of the core (1.4V on the first OC at 915 ), that kind of stuff.

For now this card will suit my purposes, but I've learned my lesson, don't buy any PC component until it has been out for more than a couple of months. I got this card 2 weeks after it was release, so it still fell under initial public release .

It will take some time, but I'll post more results here with my ASUS EAH4890 here as they become available.

Well, I've hit 1 Ghz @ 1.35 volts for a short period of time with my GPU hitting 64C (26C ambient at the time), limited so far only by my VRM temps. I haven't done enough testing to know if it's truly stable though. Mine is stable at 960/1100 at stock volts. I haven't gotten around to really pushing my vRAM clocks though, not yet. Stupid VRMs.

With Rivatuner plus the voltage plugin, and a T-Rad 2 + the Thermalright VRM cooler, 1 Ghz core should be no problem for your card. And it is much quieter than the reference cooler to boot.

I'm going to get the Thermalright VRM-1 cooler (to take advantage of my side case fan, and avoid any potential clearance issue with my 120x38mm HSF), and really push my card to the limits.

Based on what WannabeArchimedes and I are getting, better a high quality reference and a substandard quality reference, you'll probably see between a 10-20C or more GPU temperature drop under load with the T-Rad2 or T-Rad2 GTX. Also not to mention the significant reduction in noise with either 2 92x25mm or 1 120x25mm fans. I think the most noticeable changes would would be if you included a VRM-R1 or -R2 with it, then you'll see the VRM temps drop 10-35C from idle to load.

I've been using ASUS SmartDoctor to control my voltage, so the only bad thing is that I have to set the voltages on every reboot (small 5sec nuisance, no big deal).

Right on, let us know how that VRM-R1 works for you. It does come with 2 thermal strips, so you don't have to worry about using any thermal paste on those tiny, little VRMs . Just don't do as I did, I bought 2 80x20mm AVC high volume fans (59.27cfm) thinking, and for some reason thinking they were 80x25mm. The good thing is they were only $2 a piece and I bought them at the same time as the T-Rad2 GTX, VRM-R2, and my 2 blue LED 120x25mm CoolerMaster fans, so I'm not really that upset about it.

Hey there,

Quick question, based on the screen shot where your using TechPowerUp GPU Monitor, does it indicate your VRM temps? (i'm not familiar with the program)

If not what does?

Cheers.
