Hey guys, finally got my HD4870 yesterday (replaced my 8800GTS 320), but i was expecting it to have that stock fan that exhausts air out the back of the case, like most of the high end cards today, but instead i got this:



So far im running the card OC at 800/1000, no problems, no crashes. But theres actually no ram sinks on the memory chips, that makes me worry... any idea as to why XFX would change the fan? and should I be in the ok?
I climb to 100C while gaming.

Oh lord that is goofy lookin. Sorry to hear about your luck why would they change the fan design when they already know how hot those things get. I would apply some better thermal paste and then go from there.

how is your cases airflow, that could be your problem. If you want a small decrease in temps replace the thermal paste and maybe the heatsink down the track.

Well, I have a LanBox... i was thiking of modding its perspex sides with an intake on the left, and an exhaust on the right. At the moment, its just an 80mm in the front (intake) which is blowing directly on to 2 hard drives... and then 2 really small fans at the back (exhaust), smaller than 80mm. But the perspex sides are vented.

Clearly this new design is hotter... Why XFX why???
What would you recommend the best GPU cooler for this card?

What are the VDDC Slave temperatures on your 4870?

Check with Rivatuner or GPU-Z

And what % fan speed are you running at

The new fan design is suppose to allow you to run @ higher fan speed with less noise (Non Turbine fan like original 2slot cooler),
only problem is it sprays the heat everywhere ;P

bad move XFX....

why they'd do that to a 4870 is beyond me, the cards known to run hot as its pretty high end & they've dumped a cooler on there which they appear to have ripped straight off the X800GT

They must of changed the sensors on this new cooler card, VDDC temps are not displaying in GPU-Z like so :
Bare in mind, my 4870 is also an XFX one, just old cooler.




I would assume your vddc temps will be extremely high just going by the core temps i'm seeing there.

I would really considering returning the card and switching to an old cooler card (if possible), You're not going to like those temps for long, and they'll be heating up your whole case.

Nah im not going to sent it back... got a big lan this weekend ill just get an aftermarket cooler next month.
Then again my case ambient temp is hot, i'll add some extra fans on the perspex vents and see what happens...
