How do I aftermarket cool a 5870?

Ahhh, I see what you did. Instead of literally using a strap tie and tying the fan onto the cooler you used the head of the strap tie to hold the fan in place.
Good idea!

still working out a few things and experimenting, I will make a thread and post the link here. I can't make any mistakes since the card is worth ALLOT of money.
Still having issues finding a program to flash my card's bios on windows 7.

Yeah, the concept is the same:
