This may be because the games put more load onto the graphics card. Don't forget when you scan for artifacts the test screen is small and games are full screen and would put more load on it.

it maxedout at 561/313 and im at 555/306 if i go much lower ill beback to th ebegining. is the core speed or memory speed more benifical? and would tweaking the clock speeds help?

On my Card ATI X600 the core speeds are better to increase. On most NVIDIA cards its the other way round usually.
ATI - Core
NVIDIA - memory
Obviously for the lower cards (by both) the core is usally better.
