Default Dual 3870x2 and 3dmark06
Alright I know 3d mark 06 isn't the best for benching I know this. My issue is with a single 3870x2 I get 14,000 pts ( no overclock). But with the pair in crossfire x I only get 15,000 pts. What could the problem be. I am using the latest drivers from ATI's website. 1 8 pin connector and 1 6 pin connector per card. Any help or suggestions are welcome.

Overclock your cpu. If you have oc'd the cpu, then there's something definitely wrong; maybe you haven't enable crossfire. I get 22k with a dual so you should see a much better score if you get that 9450 to 3.6GHz and above since the cpu score on 3dMark 06 is skewed for quads.

He has a P35 motherboard - 16/4x slots

That is really low for X2's - my normal 3870's got 17k [overclocked] on my P35 board and now 20k on my X38 board

What clock is your CPU at - having 4 GPU's and a low CPU clock will limit it alot - mine with stock[2.4ghz] CPU on P35 board - 14.5k - quad at 3.8ghz - 17878 marks

Overclock that quad - best way to increase score

I just ran 3dmark06 with one 3870x2 and e6550@3.4.

So Id say something is awry.

It's not screwed - the 4x slot makes a difference - but not that much of a difference - mine only made 2k difference

As i said - overclock the CPU and see your score increase rapidly - that board can overclock well as that is the same as my old board - my quad got up to [unstable] 3.96ghz on it. - that gave me 17878 with 2 HD3870's and you have X2's

I used to get 19k+ with E8500@4.46GHz + single 3870x2 on 3dmark06.
Your rig should score higher since you're using Q9450, try to oc it and post ur result again.
Q9450 + 3870x2 = 14k is kinda silly.... wrong items for wrong person.
