Default Need help setting up a 4870

I'm building a new computer for my son. Just got in a 4870 yesterday. I have used Nvidia cards for years. Ati is new to me. I have downloaded the 8.7 drivers.

Do the 8.7 drivers fix the fan speed problem I keep hearing about, or do
I still need the patch?

What other software do I need for this card? Something to monitor temperature? Fan speed?

Thanks for any help.

Frankly as far as I know it's just Plug-and-Play, install the drivers and it's good to go.
The Catalyst Control Center (driver) has GPU temp monitoring, if you see any issues you can refer to this thread (and copy/paste the text file) to fix whatever issue you may have with the fans.

My experience with the 4870s and their heat woes was that you definately needed to go in and change the values in the fanspeed xml for CCC. My card came with the fan speed stock at 16% (I wanted to punch the thing) but once the fanspeed change is in place it idled at around 46c (vs the 78c of stock fan).

But as long as there is plenty of ventilation and you aren't really overclocking the card, you should be fine with the stock fan settings. The card is good to about 100C and even with my 16% and full load I never saw the thing go above 85C. So its pretty much up to you.
