Default Computer BSOD when CCC starts

I have been having these weird problem with the 8.9's. I got my 4870 and installed it with the 8.9's installed and everything worked fine.

A box popped up and asked me to enable Crossfire X, everything ran good. Then as soon as I installed the waterblocks and took off the stock heatsinks, the computer would bluescreen at start up.

So i booted in safe mode and disabled all the startup programs. Everything worked fine, but as soon as I try to start the CCC it will reboot. I reinstalled windows and started fresh with all the drivers, no other programs just chipset, video, sound, network drivers.

Still same bluescreen every time it starts. So then I took out the 4870 and it worked fine. Then I thought it was the card that was bad that something may have been damaged during the block install. I took it out and sent it back to newegg.

Wait a week and I get the new one, install it and it is doing the same exact thing. Everything worked, just no CCC.

So then I saw that the 8.10 beta's were out, now I install those and everything works fine. No more blue screens, I then uninstalled these and reinstalled the 8.9 still doesn't work. So I went back to the 8.10 this time.

Did unplugging the fan cause the BSOD's in the 8.9?

I also get a BSOD when I try to start CCC. Running a 4850 OC'ed a bit, but it crashes just the same at stock. No idea what is causing this. Probably not a related issue as you're running a tri-fire setup, but I thought I'd throw this out there incase anyone had a fix!

I found this in the article about the gigabyte overclocking story.

Quote:
Sometime in the middle of Round 2, Team USA 1 (Ross & Maxi) finally had a working system, and even uploaded a few competitive results (8.360-8.375). The reason they missed all of the first round and much of the second was due to an issue that affected many teams. Naturally, everyone removed the stock Radeon HD 4870 cooler to install their own LN2 pots, and obviously unplugged the fan(s) as well. Well apparently, the ATI drivers or Catalyst Control Center (CCC) or VGA BIOS was detecting the lack of fan RPM and rebooting the system. None (or few) of the competitors had previously experienced this issue with Radeon HD 4870's, so it is perfectly understandable that it took so long to narrow down the source of the problem. By the way, you may notice that their table still looked suprisingly clean...a little too clean...well that's because they wisely invaded a neighbouring table.
I don't know if maybe your problem is the video card isn't reading the fan speed correctly.

The second I installed the 8.9's it ruined my computer forever. I've not been able to install 8.8's or 8.10 betas. I'm stuck with the 8.5's that came on the cd with the cards. That's your best shot. I've never seen such trouble with drivers. My friend is having the same issue with his HIS ICEQ's. I'm bringing my cards over to his place tonight to try them. If not they may be returned. Though it puts me between a rock and a hard spot since I have a DS4-X48.

I haven't heard about this issue before, but if you can't figure it out, you can always try using ATI tray tools or Rivatuner instead of CCC.

BSOD with the drivers that came with the CD too, as well as 8.9s and 8.10s... damn, lol.
