Alright, its been a while since I've ran an ATI card, so I may be missing something here. But take a look at my sig rig (as of right now).
I just installed Windows XP SP2. I also installed SP3 on there, and am working on updates. However, there's a problem. If I install the ATI Drivers for the card in my sig, it just locks up. Details: Windows Update Driver: If I install this one, I get a black screen with a cursor that blinks. It sits there forever. It won't stop until I force the computer off. When it turns back on, it won't boot. It just hangs during the boot screen for Windows. I have no idea what driver it is, but it's from September of 2007. Visiontek's Latest Driver (8.11): I followed the directions. I installed Dot Net Framework Pack 2. I then restarted, and proceeded to install the drivers. Same issue as above (Windows Update Driver). ATI's Driver (8.12): I downloaded and installed the "Driver Only" package. Again, same issue as above (Windows Update Driver). The only way I've been able to keep the rig running is by forcing it to boot into "Last Known Good Configuration". At that point, I have no GPU drivers. So what am I doing wrong? Is there something I'm missing before I can install an ATI Driver?

Do you have all .net frameworks installed? Whenever I install windows I always make sure .net is fully up to date before installing the ATI drivers, try driver cleaner and reinstall 8.11's or .12's.

Yup, .net framework is all there. Windows is 100% up to date. I have tried 8.11's and 8.12's now. Both do the same thing, freeze on reboot. I'm trying I think 7.3's now (ouch).

Thanks for that! I'll try those out. Did you use the ones straight off ATI's website, or something else? Linky?

. And Windows is reporting that it is 100% up to date.Again though, ALL other drivers are installed and functioning properly (thank you Windows Update, as I couldn't even start to find the proper drivers). Its just the GPU driver that I'm having issues with I think.

ATI recommends letting it sit for at least a half an hour, supposed to be fine. I can't confirm that as Its never happened to me. I would go back to 8.7 drivers and work your way up from there.

. Thank you!BTW, I have tried the following drivers, and they ALL do the same stupid thing. So I am searching around google for my motherboard to see if maybe there's a proprietary AGP driver or something that is needed before it works. I've seen it happen before, and I just thought of that. Will of course update. Drivers I have tried now and failed: Windows Update Catalyst 8.12 Catalyst 8.11 Catalyst 8.10 Catalyst 8.9 Catalyst 8.8 Catalyst 8.7 Since it appears to be a pattern here, I am going to now search for my motherboard to see if there's something I may be missing. Windows Update USUALLY does a great job at finding necessary drivers on older hardware like this. But hey, you never know!
