Ah don't know what I was thinking... he probably set it like that because he wasn't sure of the maximum safe voltage, which is what the topic's about.

Yeah its all good, i've heard you can go up to 1.2 volts, and thats as far as the card will go without hardmod's. (Don't Quote me, try google)

The answer is this: 1.12 volts is standard for a 4830. Bios moding gets it to 1.15. Hard modding the safest would be anything under 1.5 volts(runing mine at 1.46 or so)

this is probably irrelevant, but FYI I got my 3870 to 1.6V using the new voltmod of 4.20 ohms, the core didn't get to 60 C

Don't forget it is an older chip and when you go backwards, it usually requires more volts to power it
