Default Hard lockup driving me nuts

When I play certain games, I get a hard lockup guaranteed. It might take 10 minutes or 2 hours, but it'll happen.

I reinstalled various versions versions of catalyst, cleaning it with driver sweeper everytime. I locked the fan speed at various speeds in case it was the temp. I overlocked slightly, underclocked slightly. I disabled sound and changed various sound settings. I updated Windows 7, disabled AV and firewall. Closed all other programs. Still crashed.

I reinstalled xp and tried all of the above again. Games still lockup and I have to do a hard reset.

In Windows 7, games that would lockup: Left 4 dead, vanguard and Warhammer Online.

In Xp now: Warhammer Online (haven't tried vanguard tbh)

but L4D is fine now! I turned sound quality to medium and now no crashes.

Any ideas or tips? I thought it might just be buggy game but my bros play it fine. I looked on the game forums and no solution comes up, seems to be a common problem. Nvidia cards also seem to have it (in fact, maybe even more common with them)

Same thing happened to me(recently, waiting for RMA), was the Graphics card. I tried everything, but in the end an RMA was needed. GPU folding kept locking up.

It started out slow, but then the lock-ups got more frequent. As painful as it sounds try onboard video for a few days.

I used to have that same problem back in the day with Warhammer. Thank god it turned out to be a....nm don't want to start a WAR....

Back on topic: I was running a 295 and Warhammer was still locking up. There was no way I couldnt handle Warhammer on a 295 so I messed with everything possible. New DirectX files, drivers, even went to a sound card thinking maybe my sound was crashing me out. Nothing worked.

So for da hell of it I took my buddies 4870x2 and guess what I had no issues at all and game worked great for hours, till I had to give the card back lol. Back to the 295 and it would crash. So after finally figuring it was my card I bumped the voltage up 2 steps and it has been running like a dream. Even with the overclock in my sig I NEVER had another video crash or lock-up. Mind you I now play Aion and ArmA2 which both are much more taxing on video than WAR and it is still fine.

Check your System Messages(event viewer)(right click on the ATI Catalyst on the taskbar) to see if there are any errors in there related to the GPU.

My Guess you have the same problem I did, mine would freeze when un-pausing and resuming work units. It would then sit there for about 5-10 minutes and spring back to life and say my display driver stopped responding but has recovered. I thought it to be a driver problem, but the problem continued after I re-installed Vista.

Next time it freezes wait 5-10 minutes, it might come back to life and give you a error message.

As long as your card was purchased within the pass 4 years, and you didn't use third party heatsinks, Palit should take it. Sapphire took mine and it was an open-box! It couldn't hurt to try at least, if they are going to turn you down its going to be in e-mail form.

Good luck Man!

Mine does a hard-lockup and doesn't recover (30+ minutes). I will check the logs. Lately it's been ONLY doing it in xp in WAR...

So I'm wondering if it might only be related to the game... hmmm
