Using a 790 Ati AMD board is it possible to crossfire a x2 4870 with an x1 4870 both at 1 gig per core.

Yes, you can. I'm not sure how big of a performance gain you'll see, but it's certainly possible.

Yes, you can crossfire any 4800 series card with any other 4800 (including X2 cards) series card as long as you don't exceeded 4 GPUs.

Any permutation of 4870's is valid (ie 4870x2 + 4870, 3 4870's, 2 4870 1 GB + 1 4870 512 MB etc)

Although, i've run trifire before. Unless you are benching, it tends to be unnecessary. Essentially, you won't be able to jack up any settings over 2x cards because microstutter starts to become an issue. Or, it was in my experience.

You can crossfire a 3870 and a 3850. You can even crossfire a 2900 and a 3870.

You can't do that. The cards need to be from the same gen and of the same series (48xx with 48xx, 46xx with 46xx, 38xx with 38xx, ect ect ect)
