If you are lucky you can do the 9.8 straight over the 9.7.
In most cases this won't happen and the 9.8 will get angry with you so you get loadsa driver problems.

I recommend the driver clean.
VERY GOOD Driver clean.
We are dealing with an installed ATI driver here, and they love you so much they want to stay with you forever.

I'm usually all for using DriverCleaner, but I was able to install 9.8 over 9.7 without any problems.

I just update drivers rather than clean install. They give me no issue.

That is, unless you switch over to ATI from Nvidia or vice versa.

I do a driver sweeper for every driver install, gets rid of any variables that may adversely affect performance.

i have always just installed over the previous version and never had a problem. I am pretty sure ATI designed it so that you can install over the previous version.
