Clock for clock, the 2900pro/xt has exactly the same pixel fillrate, texture fillrate and shader processing power as the 3870. The ONLY difference is that the 3870 has significantly lower memory bandwidth.

Now if the 3870 is still pulling ahead clock for clock (which it hasn't) then there would definitely be something fishy going on because performance wise they are the exact same architecture.

edit:
here is a good comparison of the two using the crysis hotfix driver:
http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...2219904,00.asp

That is an extremely unbiased website.
Dude, I hate to break it to you, but the only thing the 2900xt has going for it is bandwidth. That helps at higher resolutions, but the 3800 series are being judged on the first release of its drivers. Give it a few more driver releases and it'll beat the 2900xt. Besides, looking at the closeness of the specs and the price differences between the two, the 3870 is obviously the best choice...

And it's an architechture refresh, you really think they wouldnt refresh the card and just shrink it?

Word. And about the 512-bit bus on the 2900's and the 256-bit bus on the 3800's because of the smaller core, trying to fit a 512-bit bus is physically very difficult, besides, the smaller core makes better use of a 256-bit bus, therefore making a 256-bit/55nm combination just as effective as a 512-bit/80nm combination.

Dude I've seen the gpureview comparison a million times. I know the 3870 is faster than the XT at stock speeds!

Do you know how to calculate the pixel and texture fillrates? It's the core speed multiplied by the # of ROPs for pixel fillrate and number of TMUs for texture fillrate. THE 2900 and 3870 HAVE THE EXACT SAME NUMBER OF ROPs and TMUs.

Clock for clock (NOT AT STOCK SPEEDS) the 2900 is the faster card.

If there are driver updates that improve performance on the 3870 then they will equally improve performance on the 2900, because the architecture is VIRTUALLY THE SAME. Yes, it was refreshed. In the refresh, the die has been made smaller (55nm), UVD+ support has been added, and the DX10.1 approval sticker has been slapped on. Now the 2900 already supports the DX10.1 specific features, 4xFSAA and full FP32 support.

I mean I don't know how hard this is to understand, I have explained this in DETAIL a million times and people are STILL posting the comparison on gpureview and saying "dude look teh 3870 is faster *** r u smoking".

I am NOT saying the 2900 is a better buy. I am trying to clear up a widespread misunderstanding here.

SpaceCat:
Using PCIE 2 over PCIE 1 will have absolutely no difference on how much you can overclock or the performance. All it does is increase the theoretical bandwidth of the PCIe bus. Even though there is not a video card in existence that can fully saturate a PCIe x16 bus anyway. It might be useful with things like quad and octa crossfire though.

well about the bandwith i agree with u.
the thing im wondering about is the power draw from the pci-e slot it self
thinking maby the pci-1.0 cant deliver what the card ask's for when i oc that hige
