Core speeds don't do that, memory speeds/timings do.

The canadian website that overclocked the 3870 to 860MHz core and 2.7xGHz mem did not post a screenshot of GPU-Z. Even if they did I seriously doubt the bandwidth would have increased so drastically that it would surpass 125GB/s. The 256-bit memory bus and 512-bit internal ring bus are what kills the memory on the 3870. If ATI had used 512-bit gddr4 memory with a 1024-bit internal ring bus, the 2900 series would not have stood a chance against the 3870 and nvidia would be sweating a lot more than they are now. Unfortunately, they didn't.
if they did so, the 3870 would pwn a 2900 with ease. then no one would buy any of these 2900. they must sell what they have made. its all business. i believe as soon as they clear the 2900 stock, a new 3870 with adequate bandwidth will be out.

2900pro,1gb vs 3870unlocked,512mb
i think who is the best here depends on the resolution u are playing at

i dont think the bigger bandwith would be utilised when u have only 512mb ram

so a faster clocked 3870,512mb will beat a 2900,1gb @ lower resolutions (like 1680x1050)

that is what i think anyway(makes sense in my head lol)

smart move by ati both cards will still sell

alsow ceep in mind this was never meant to be a top end card its a mid range
the roumered r680 is the topend card
i'l bet my pinky that card will have the bandwith and the memmory size to suport huge resolutions
not too talk about the two cores on board

And that is with programs that are designed to put maximum strain on the card to test overclock stability. In normal games it never goes over 58C.
on my 2900 it never goes above 63ish with the stock heat sink while the idle temps are right at 60* wouldn't say they suck that bad. only time I have seen it go higher is if my room starts getting a little warm. though granted my computer is a little louder then yours.

the mighty one most cards can't overclock 1mhz at a time. I believe a lot of them are setup for soemthing liek 23-27mhz jumps at a time. and I have seen it a few times going from one bump to the next and wam black screen and crash. actually both the x1950xt and 2900pro when overclocking the core I have yet to get graphic errors. only graphical errors I get when doing the core is a sudden lock up with a bunch of random 1/8" blocks on the screen. though usually I just get black screen. with memory though it's another store. I can usually get those graphic artifacts you speak of. core almost never.

my 9250 is another story though that thing can adjust clock speeds in around 3-5mhz jumps at a time and can show graphic glitches after a small jump like that.

Yeah that would be nice but if they do that, a lot of people who already purchased 3870s will be pretty pissed! Though that dosen't totally make sense, with the HD3000 prices being as low as they are, I think nobody would be buying the 2900s anyway.

Wow I must be getting old! 1680x1050 is now considered low res! That might be true but this is assuming that the hard lock at 860MHz is ever fixed, and if it is fixed, that it will be able to surpass the huge overclocks on the 2900. It is likely that it will, but still I wouldn't bet money or anything. Look at the old P4 Northwood 2.4c. Intel has yet to release a CPU that consistently overclocks as high as the northy did (even if it still sucked )

I also know about the RV680 (the 3870X2). Yes that will own everything currently on the market. It will also own anything nvidia has released currently and is planning to release still in the 8 series, unless they do the same thing and release a dual GPU card. I doubt it will be 512-bit with a 1024-bit internal ringbus though, that requires a considerably larger amount of circuitry and if you look at the pictures of it, the card is packed to the point of bursting

ATI has already released a new BIOS to fix an issue with the current/review cards they have the PLL VIO divider set wrong, which prevents the cards from reaching over 862MHz on core
so i'm hoping this will be aviable for download then if my card dosnt have the latest bios

Where is that on XS? I can't find it. Anyway that is very good news, I wonder how high the core will get now!
