What makes you think it is locked and not just not capable of doing faster, at least not without more voltage and/or better cooling? The stock cooler sucks on them.

The stock cooler is awesome. Basically the same as the one on my 2900, which gives me great temps with minimal noise.

Also, the fact that overclockers get to 860MHz, 100% stable. Then increase the clock by a mere 1MHz and bam, black screen. That simply does not happen in overclocking.

It sucks that the BIOS is locked. I really want to see how far the card can oc.

Being so new, it'll take a while for someone to get a unofficial BIOS out.

If the reported temperatures from Guru3d when overclocking to 860MHz are true, then yeah I would say it does suck [the cooler]. They reported load in the 80s. On my 2900 (a hotter running card to boot) @ 820MHz with a thermalright hr-03 the full load temp never goes over 63C. And that is with programs that are designed to put maximum strain on the card to test overclock stability. In normal games it never goes over 58C.

Did guru3d play about with fan settings?

The reviews I've read show the 3870 running hotter BUT quieter. So, AMD have just played about with the fan speed profile for some reason.

No they didn't, but even so, I get those temps with almost silent fan operation. My HDD is louder.

The 860 lock sounds plausible as my card will run 860, but about this = instant black screen. As for temps, my cards peak at around 84 degrees or so, which is a good 10 degrees cooler than my X1900XT's ran

Yes it does. Someone doesn't work with GPU core speeds much I see.

Probably going to need to BIOS flash it. I'm going to run mine right below the cut off and see how easy the flashes go.
