Default HD 2900 vs HD 3800

So I get that the 3800 series is the latest and greatest from ATi. I know they are DX 10.1 and PCIe 2.0, but what else is there? On paper the 3870 looks like the middle man between the 2900XT and the 2600XT.

Where are they designed to compete?

The 3870 is designed to compete with the 8800GT. Remember, the 3870 is basically a 55nm 2900XT (which is 80nm) with some minor tweaking. Nothing to shout about.

But doesn't the 3870 fall way short with its 256bit memory interface?

Consider the energy savings if you switched. Each card uses about 100W less than the 2900XT.

I keep forgetting about that. But, it would take a long time for the small energy savings (relative to total system power use) to make up for the cost of buying a new card.

Basically, the 3870 is the final nail in the coffin of the 2900XT. Theres no reason to get one now, especially since the 3870 is faster, cheaper and uses far less power.
