Kurei, I believe everything worked fine until he switched to a 4850. His 7xxx series video card worked perfectly without the shutdown problems.

i hear that... but just to test.... its not that ulikely that he might have messed something up while plugging in the card.... i know someone who was installing a card and managed to bend a mobo capacitor so much that it was shorted...

Does Vista have some Event Viewer like in XP?

Also, you said you ran Driver Cleaner... but have you choose to remove both Nvidia and Ati/AMD drivers?

well i ordered an antec 550 watt modular PSu since it was a good deal and backup psu was needed.

tried it out in the machine and yet with another 90 watts, it still does the same thing. i think it's safe to say the PSU is not the problem here.

event viewer?

i removed the Nvidia display driver.

i did not remove the chipset driver, as my chipset is nvidia.

but just in case that was the case i gave it a try, and downloaded the latest drivers and reinstalled. still no fix.

Vista's Event Viewer.
Does that show any problem in you system related with you card (either Applications or System)?

You could try that...
* Uninstall the current driver.
* Boot in safe mode.
* Uninstall all leftovers from Nvidia and Ati/AMD video drivers.
* While in safe mode, reinstall the latest amd driver.

If that doesn't help, than it's not a driver issue.

This n00b again, crazy question here but do you happen to have another machine local that has a PCI-E slot that you could test this card in to see if the problem reproduces itself?

Good luck
