If I were AMD I would release at $550, early adopters tax, then a month later reduce to $499. IMO they could do $550 easily still sell out and then reduce to $499 and gain marketshare. but then again they have people smarter than I working for them.

I could see this working, but I think releasing at $499 will get them just as much profit/market share in the end, plus make everyone love them. You might see prices go up in the first few weeks due to demand, but I bet the MSRP stays at $499.

I don't know, but I'm picking up two as soon as they drop below $400

2GB of vram is huge, and ddr5!!! If ATI release at the price they say they will and with this amount of ddr5, I think nvidia are going to find it hard to beat it at they're current prices.
As long as the 4870x2 is released with good drivers, to unleash the card to it's full power, I think this card will be a real winner!
Looking forward to the reviews!

easy... 499 seems reaonable enough... the $300 4870 is so much more than just the hardware ...when it comes to deciding sale price.... there is packing, transportation and all such collateral built into the cost now for one card those things dont get multiplied by 2 ...believe me these costs are not negligible...so 60 % of SP being decided by component costs this would mean you should be able to first see the X2 at between $475-$525

I say yes. They want to keep it competitive at the price level for certain. I cannot see them wanting to go any higher than that unless they know they will still have Nvidia by the balls due to there higher prices.

ATI could release a 1GB version above $499 and nvidia still wouldn't have a prayer with their current prices.

(I'm going to pretend like that article isn't from Fudzilla and respond anyways. )

But ATi isn't NVidia

You can't assume that one company will do something simply because the other does. I like to believe that, for the most part, companies learn from their mistakes as well as the mistakes of their competitors. So in my mind, this means that the 4870x2 will be what they say it will.

Plus, the $499 price tag makes perfect sense. You can't just simply multiply a 4870s cost by 2 and say that is what a 4870x2 will cost (4870=$300, so 4870x2=$600....). sure, i can see it being that way if it were as simple as gluing 2 4870 gpus on a longer piece of cardboard than a piece of cardboard with only one 4870, since the only pieces of hardware in the equation are the gpus; but the fact is that a 4870x2 still only uses one heatsink, one pcb, one fan, just like a 4870 does. all of those pieces of hardware aren't doubled like the gpu is, so the price can't be justified as 2x the cost of one 4870.

rant complete

Are you still as confident as you were yesterday that it will release for $600+?

How do you figure a card that has 2 4870's on it, with even more memory, and a PCI Express 2.0 onboard is going to be only 66% more?

The 4870X2 will retail for over $600, I gurantee it. If it was only $499 there would be no available stock until Q4...
