I'm going to bump it again to try to answer your question.

I'll be honest, I am not sure...

According to the tests done in my sig with a bunch of different peoples help, the 4890 at stock is only about 500 points lower then 4850 crossfire at stock... in 3dmark06
I paid $135 each for both my cards a while back (1 had MIR, 1 was open box). It is possible to get 4890's at a low cost. I would personally have gone with a 4890 if it had been out at the time to compare to my 4850's.

But when you can get 2x 4830's at 75 bucks each, and OC them both to around 4850 performance, and then put them in crossfire....I would go with the 4830's over the 4890.

AND EVEN BETTER! The 4770's now run cooler, and are better then the 4830's at stock, and they somehow scale better in crossfire... sometimes close to 100%. And each of them can be had for around $100 (?).... I would also go with them over the 4890.

It is up to you, but I will say one thing... it is a helluvalot easier to cool, power, overclock, and use a single card(I've delt with SLI and Crossfire).
