If you're wary about shelling out $300 on one, get a 4850 now and another one a month from now. Two 4850s provide about a 50% performance increase from a single 4870, at least if all the math translates. A 4870 is ~20% better than a 4850 and two 4850s is ~75% better than a single 4850.

No way!

A single 4870 would pwn those cards right into the ground. Hardcore.

A single 4870 would be a very close match for a pair of 8800GTS' much less regular GT's

Perhaps you should update your info...

A pair of 8800 GTs should perform better than a single 4870. If the 8800 GTs weren't bottlenecked, the pair should perform the 4870 by about 25%.

I suggest getting a 750i FTW or 790i board if you wanted to run two 8800 GTs. That would probably be more expensive than getting a 4870 or even two 4850s. It depends which board you get. Since you already have a X48 board, I suggest either a 4850 now and one later or a 4870.

Woah! Hang on a minute. Your FPS dips below 30 with an 8800GT in TF2??

I question other parts of your system or if the card you have is funked. An 8800GT should blow TF2 out of the water, even at 24" resolutions.

Upgrading will give you a performance boost, but it's not worth the money over an 8800 for such small increases.

Try upgrading your drivers, or using the stock drivers on the disc that came with your card. Overclock your card, or trade it in for a new one because it should be WAYYYY faster then that.

Well man, I'd do a little more investigating. How's your FPS in other games?

If you can push your CPU to 2.8 - 3.0GHz stable as a 24/7 OC, you'll be alright. COD4 and TF2 are 2 very well optimized games and I'm surprised your getting such low FPS in TF2.

If you feel you need to upgrade, I'd sell the 8800GT and go the 4870 route. Good single card GPUs like that are your best price/performance option.
