I would go with the 4850. If you overclock the 4850 to the same core speed as the 4870 (easily possible) then you are only talking 5-7% difference between the GDDR3 and GDDR5 memory for ~$100 more.

Also, I would consider looking at Silverstone's OP and DA line of powersupplies. Great products, top of the line. I would say they are higher quality PSU's than Corsair.

OP650 ~$140 with a 54Amp 12V line
OP800 ~$160 with a 66Amp 12V line

Here is a comparison between the 256MB and 512MB versions of the 8800GT. Like I said earlier, extra frame buffer overhead will provide better performance. The differences might not be this much, but at high resolutions with settings maxed and AA and AF cranked up, the 1GB 4870 will reign. Except in Crysis.

You could also overclock the 4870's processor and memory and it would blow the 4850 away in any overclocked configuration. Once you overclock the GDDR5 memory, it's not a fair contest. Resolutions will dictate which card to get.

Was kind of surprised last night, after installing my 2nd 4870 and overclocking it, that while playing flight simulator X, and Crysis, that it's only drawing somewhere between 480-510 watts from the battery backup, so the system is only drawing somewhere around 420-430!

Default same situation as OP

Hi, I was wondering, does anyone knoe how much of the bus bandwidth a 4870 uses under load. Like how much of the PCIe 16x 2.0 bus does it even use? im still debating what one to get. I have a P45 board, e8400, 2 gigs of OCZ Reaper 1066, and a PPC&C 610W @ 40c PSU. so would that even handle two 4870s if i did get them? Interesting thread BTW.

I will say it again, the HD4850 is fine if not GREAT for 1920x1200. Don't be fooled by the amount of RAM, or it's speed, this card owns.

Well, Even if I didn't exactly plan on playing on my games in it I'd like to get the highest resolution monitor possible just for the sake of it lasting a good while which means unless I pay $2000 for an NEC monitor, I'll be getting something 24" with 1920x1200. Wish I could afford an NEC again, my one now is one, did fine for almost 5 years I think it is, it just seems that the resolution is too low nowadays and widescreen is the thing now so.

So I guess 1920x1200 is what I'll be shooting for. The GDDR3 vs GDDR5 will make that much of a difference? And I'm not sure if I'll be overclocking the gpu, would that require aftermarket cooling or should a stock dual slot cooler do fine?

Also, why does anything over 2 gpus seem to just be worse? In the reviews they did 2 4870s versus 3 and 4 4870 configurations and it seemed either no benefit or even worse performance from the ones with 3 and 4. Is that just drivers? Like could that eventually get better? Would that mean CFing 2 4870x2s would be worse?

Also, what's with people thinking 30fps is unplayable? I've dealt with it for years, and while it can get annoying when it turns into a slideshow at high action points there's really no difference past that besides just not having the risk of slideshow moments.

To the thread starter:
  • 4870 for the GDDR5 (Clock till you drop )
  • X38 cause they're cheaper than the X48 (Almost the same performance)
Although i dont have any links off-hand, i hear the P35/P45 boards take a hit in crossfire performance when compared to the upper chipsets, X38/X48.

Orly? Then whats this?

X38 + 2 x (4870X2) = ???

BTW: First post, yay!

Edit: I foudn this thread through google, and since this topic (4800 series) is reletively new, i forgot to check the thread date until after i posted... oops.
