Change the value to "manual" and Want value to any number between 15-100. This will be the percentage that the fan runs at.

Save the file, and then reload your profile. You will notice the fan speed pick up, depending on how you set the speed.

NOTE: for crossfire users, you will need to edit the seperate values for core 0 and core 1. Just locate the second iteration of the above data, and set the same parameters, and you'll be set.

Just wanted to clarify for any big noobies (like me). Put a number between 15 and 100, dont put 15-100.

Also for me I find 30 works very well, keeps it very cool, and isn't very loud :-D

35 Isn't too loud either and will keep it cooler.

Hi all,

I just picked up a 4870 (for $200...thank you, Best Buy Reward Zone). I read in a number of reviews that the card runs hot. In the eyes of the experts here, is additional cooling an absolute MUST to run this card? Or are high temps only a real issue if you overclock the card? I'm going through the threads now but didn't see any clear cut recommendations on this.

Thanks!

Nah, it'll run fine. RV770 is capable of really high temps.

If you are going to be overclocking though, i would suggest at least the fan speed hack, if not a new cooler.

That's good to know. What's general feeling about Rivatuner as a fan hack?

I've overclocked my Visiontek Radeon HD 4870 to 820/1080. Voltage remains (I think) stock at 1.2625v. I use RivaTuner for overclocking as well as fan control (ramp up from 2500-2700 RPM at 49*C to 4000-ish at maximum load around 66*C).

Here's my temperature results using Furmark in "Xtreme Burning" mode. Notice the VDDC and memory I/O temperatures. The image mostly speaks for itself.

I mean, 90*C+? Come on, ATI. I could understand that with the stock fan speeds, but at 65% fan load @ 4000 RPM? Really?

You should just be happy that the card didn't overheat and crash with those settings. The VRM's on these cards get stupidly hot.

I agree, they do get quite hot.

I just tried OCing to 850/1080 testing with Furmark and I crashed about 10 minutes in at 69*C with VDDC about 101*C. Memory I/O was 80-81*C. Going to try 840 now and see how that goes.

EDIT: Over 20 minutes in now and I seem fine at 840 Core, 1080 Memory. No smoke or crashes or fires yet.....

you need to rename furmark.exe to something different to get the full load. Name it to something like UT3.exe or something.

I called it Furmarko.exe and definitely saw an increase in heat and FPS.

At least, assuming you were talking to me.
