Default Modding 4850 for 50% temps!!!! (goal)

L00ook what UPS brought today!

Lapped the E8400....get this started right!

Now, these 4850s seem to have quite the temperature issue eh? The heatsink burnt my hand before windows was even booted! Here's what CCC said before XML editing to 65% fan speed:

And here is after:

A marked improvement indeed....but these are IDLE temps...I'm afraid that load temps will still be too high. Never fear! I smell a mod near...

Updates forthcoming!

Cool cards, here we come!
Got the V2s in today

To put on these

Removal of o.OEM cooler revealed insight as to why these things get too hot. First, they are not really copper. Some sort of aluminum alloy that is covered in PLASTIC on the back as waell as the front...insulated plastic/aluminum heatsink? Yeah. I know. The other thing I found was some really thick, gooey thermal tape. I have never been one to use thermal tape, I prefer thermal adhesive...but we will get to that later...

Now with a little hacksaw action, we will recycle the only part of the stock cooler that may be of any use. I say "of use" because there is a 2 tier cooling dilemma at the rear of the PCB that this will be part of the solution...

Now, with the ram sinks in place we are ready to get the V2 installed NOTE: The following photo montage is of the original assembly..WHICH WAS WRONG! In order for the fan and cooler to clear the PCI slots in front of the card, the V2 MUST be turned 90 degrees counterclockwise so that the heatpipes hang over the top of the card...this is essential, which i learned soon after these next pics and corrected, yet neglected to take NEW pics....hence the warning

Now to get this to fit THAT.....where's that hacksaw?...

Oh yeah. Now a little juice to test...

EDIT: heres the proper pic:

Silent and moves A LOT more air than stock, across REAL copper no less

Installing this modded card next to a 2nd identical card with stock (and XML file edited to keep fan at 65% full time *loud*) cooling revealed:

Stock cooling w/fan at 65% IDLE TEMP:

Modded card's idle temp at same time, same system:

I can't hear the modded card, I cant hear my air conditioner over the stock :P

But it seems I have run into a slight dilemma. Being as this is a 3-way crossfire board, the PCI-Ex16 slots are so close together, I will not be able to mod both cards the same way....If someone knows how to crossfire the first and third slot, let me know, otherwise I am going to have to get creative

nice...
Is ThermalTake Mozart too small for two of those?
They will generate heat, you`ll might have to modd case for better airflow...

Do I smell sarcasm?

I need some help here....does anyone know if I can get crossfire to run on the first and third PCI-E slot? and if so, how do I bridge them?

Nice delivery you got there VCheez, I got My Board this morning Thnxs again!
Nice Modded fans and all that Cu shure is perddy.
I wouldn't want to get my fingers anywhere near that "uncaged" beast of a fan set up! but, nice temps nonetheless!
I can't answer the 1st and 3rd slot question,
I think it's board specific, some boards will allow that and some bords don't! It depends on how they're electrically done- bridged or whathaveyou!

Good Luck; I hope somebody else can answer your question
All else fails, try em in the proper slots and then in the 1st & 3rd and see what the diff is!
(you probably should have done that before hacking them up -I'm guessing that you wan't them in 1st & 3rd cuz they will no longer fit in 1st & 2nd due to your fan mods!)

when my q6700 arrives i think i'll install it unlapped first just to see the temp difference

PS: i like the recyclage of the stock HSF, except now you'll have to find a buyer who doesn't mind a cut up heat sink

Hmm, I might grab a V2 for my 4850 now that I know there's a 100% chance it'll fit.

Also, what size fan did you use?
