ATI HD4870X2 Owners Thread

I have my 3870x2 running in crossfire mode with the 8.7 drivers in xp. I would show you a gpu-z screenie but my powersupply croaked on my intel system.

Not too worried if its not the case. I have Vista 64 bit home premium sitting here ready to go (when I have the time needed to reformat/reload).

Signal with no drivers, correct?
Install the 4870 in the primary slot> restart> install drivers> restart> power down> install the X2/no CF bridge restart.
Have you tried that, just to see what happens?

I'll give it a go.

Someone else commented that mixing the cards will not work with XP which you also brought up earlier.

If thats the case, it really doesn't matter as I won't be able to load vista before I have to give the 2 4870's to the customer.

Sorry I was just thinking about a single x2 card not crossfire X sorry.

Ah, the single X2 card runs great.

so far I am really pleased with it over the two 4870's I had before.

CFX with 2+ GPUs isn't supported in XP I should have noticed your OS earlier.

While this shouldn't cause you the problems you are having, you can try loading up Vista x64(otherwise you have no RAM) when you get the chance.

How is your benchmark score compare to 2x4870s in crossfire?

So you are happy with 4870x2 over 4870 CF?

Yes I am.

Several reasons, mostly minor.

1. I can add a second one (which I will likely do once I pick up a bigger monitor)

2. The fan on the card actually works and scales correctly unlike the 4870's.

3. It's cheaper than two 4870's (I actually broke even selling my cards in this case which was fine).

4. As long as I have one instead of my prior config, less wires, more space around the card for better airflow, etc.

5. They were smart enough to put the power connectors on the card in such a way that it doesn't lengthen it beyond the space its in.

6. One of my older games that I play with a few mates would not run under the 4870's in crossfire unless I disabled it. The X2 runs the game without a hitch.

7. So far my bench scores are roughly the same (the X2 is about 100 points higher in 3dmark06, no biggie). Once I go to higher resolutions though, the 2x 1GB of memory makes for much better benches in maxed out games.
