been a user (of 4870x2) for sometime now, I usually just check the gpu core temps, which are pretty high with the stock cooler (unless u crank up the fan above 60%).

Bought a accelero xtreme cooler, installed it without any hassles. Core temps are wunderbar and the thing is silent. I glanced at my VRM temps, and it doesnt look pretty. Running a vantage run gives me temps around 100'C, playing crysis for about 15min gives about the same temps (propably would go higher over time).

I forgot to take down the temperatures on the VRMs with the stock cooler on, so could someone give me some reference numbers to compare against.

And anyone know what these VRMs can handle.
The VRMs used in the 4870X2 are Vitec 59PR9853 multi-phase inductors. The manufacturer spec for "operating environmental temperature" (which I assume is a misnomer and is closer in relation to Intel's "Thermal Specification") is 125C. i have seen them go up to 90-100C easily on stock cooling. Since they're being removed from the stock heatsink solution I wouldn't be surprised if the temps were on the higher side. Obviously, the hotter a device runs the lower the MTBF goes, so it would be ideal to cool it further, if you were so inclined and/or equipped to do so.

Appreciate the thorough answer, thanks. Well seemed, after 30min of crysis, that the VRMs were around 106'C (max), which I guess, is reasonable.

I was reading through some threads earlier and found a guy that had his VRMs hit 122C after playing Call of Juarez Bound in Blood, which caused the cards to shut down. (I am currently unable to play this particular game due to massive artifacting, thought it was a driver issue but now i am starting to wonder if my cards are just overheating)

there is a way to fix that but it involves taking apart the card which might void the warranty.......the pad that touches those vrms dries up over time, shrinks and looses contact with the vrms and temps skyrocket....i took mine apart and changed the old dried pad with a thicker gray padding from an old ati card.....temps now don't go above 85C no matter how long i play

Hehe, already pretty much voided the warranty by adding the accelero xtreme

Ok, how great or well will TWO 4870X2 scale in quadfire? Wouldn't that be better in benches and games over TWO 4890 or even TWO GTX275?

2 4870x2's are more powerful than 2 4890's. Quoted from NCspec himself.

in my experiance I have seen little change in scores (clock for clock) in fact the 2 4890's were scoring about 300 pts higher in 3dmark06. the x2's were about 4000pts higher in vantage. However benchmarking aside... I saw about 15fps higher in crysis with the x2's than with the 2 4890's.

but that was just me. ( I am no where close to the class of gbrilliantq and NCspec)
