Is this possible, I think I read somewhere that crossfire with a 4870x2 and 4870 wasn't possible. Is this true?

Yeah i heard that too and i think because 4870X2 has 1GB vs 512 4850 so no.

I think it might be possible, the only thing is, it would perform like 3 4850s in crossfire if it were, since it would downclock the 4870x2 to the 4850 speeds.
What Zealot said.

I always wanted to experiment with crossfire, while crossfire is known to be a lot more flexible than SLI, dual monitor etc. It can also crossfire different cards with different speeds and different amounts of vram. Testing shows that most of the time, the faster card will downclock to the slower card's speed, other times applications can make use of that faster card, so 4870+ 4850 > 4850 + 4850 but only 1%-5% faster for now. Crossfire also lets you overclock each card individually, so it won't be stupid and ram your GDDR3 speed to GDDR5 speed if you ever oc.
So my tip, wait till the 4850x2 comes out, its match your 4850 better and more bang for buck anyway.

I know you deleted what you said, but for purposes of education I felt I needed to comment. Crossfire does not downclock cards like SLI does. |

Hey, I think it's a good Idea. I'm thinking of that myself. The 4850s are going for 185 right now, and noticed that a 3870X2 is improved by a adding a 3870. You already have the card laying around, now's your chance to benchmark and tell us what's up

AMD has stated that the 4850 will not crossfire with the X2.
__________________they also stated that the X2 would not crossfire with the regular 4870 as well. Grunion here on the forums got a regular 4870 and an X2 working together in Crossfire (see my 4870X2 owners thread for details). He is having some issues that may be related to his DFI board (which have known issues with the X2's)

I could have sworn someone posted a CrossFire compatibility chart on here not too long ago which showed that it is possible to do a 4870 + 4870 X2 setup. Could be mistake...
