Hey guys, I just helped a friend build a new system that includes these parts:
Intel Q6600 w/ Zalman 9700 HSF 4GB G.Skill PC2-6400 Asus Radeon HD 4850 Asus P5Q-E WD VelociRaptor 300GB Antec 900 Corsair 750W power supply Pioneer optical drive Windows Vista Ultimate x64 We're having a strange issue. 3DMark06 is running extremely slowly (he got a score of ~8k at default settings), games are running slower than they should, and in general there seems to be an issue with his 4850 being recognized. It shows up in device manager, display settings, dxdiag, etc. properly as an HD 4850 however. One thing I did notice is that the computer thinks that his card has too much video RAM. It has 512MB, but dxdiag reports it as almost 1GB. Is there a setting in the BIOS that I need to change? I'm not sure what the issue is - we have the latest video drivers installed.

hey hey, sounds like a problem i have. about the video ram.
run task manager and see if it reports 4GB of ram available or 3GB available. the system properties will probably show 4gb but check task manager

Task Manager shows 4094MB of physical memory available, which is correct.

Have you attempted to update/re-install drivers yet?

I haven't done that, but if you think it's worth a shot then I will.

I uninstalled the drivers, but some kind of default driver was still lingering so I went into Device Manager and uninstalled the display adapter. Then I rebooted into Safe Mode and ran a Driver Cleaner Pro on ATI, and then rebooted and installed the latest driver from ATI's website for an HD 4850/Vista x64.
Still the same crappy performance in 3DMark06.

You have an Asus card like me right? I had problems with my card, and it solved when I uninstalled Gamer OSD, that bundled software that came in the CD. It was somehow conflicting with the CCC and causing programs to crash. I don't know if you have it installed, but you shouldn't.

I don't believe that Gamer OSD is installed, but I'll definitely look into it.
On another note, we were getting some high temps earlier (around 80C) but adjusted the fan speed to 45%, which brought temps down into the 40s and 50s... yet we still got a 79xx in 3DMark06.
