4870x2 > 2x4870 because...

1. It's one card so no need for Crossfire Board.
2. It's detected as one card.
3. Microstutter has been nearly wiped out.
4. It has 2GB (1GB per card) of memory.
5. It performs slightly better than 2x4870's based on a bunch of reviews.
6. Less heat production i would imagine.
7. You get to use a PCI-E Sound card if u have a Crossfire mobo.

I chose 3 single 4870's b/c 16 x 16 x 4 pci bandwidth seems better than 16 x 16 for 3 4870s. Plus the single hd4870's overclock higher.

you can use a sound card with two 4870's in crossfire depending on the motherboard. All of the asus boards put a PCI slot above the first graphics card slot for that purpose.

CF drivers aren't perfect, so 4870x2. 4870's would perform similarly to it, but not in all games.
