Im sure Im going to build a system with a 4870 card but what I havent seen yet is comparisons of crossfire'd 4870's (1 gig) versus one 4870x2. Would they be exactly the same on performance charts? anyone know?
Thanks

vote for two 4870!! 1. much higher overclockability. 2. aftermarket cooler can be installed quite easy, simple. 3. no microstuttering at all.

4870X2
The extra memory helps at higher res Here's some reviews for you (Keep in mind, they are a bit dated, so driver performance should be better by now) http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon...ew-crossfire/1 http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum...rd-review.html http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/154...rex/index.html http://www.overclockersclub.com/revi...pphire_4870x2/ Wrong. All multi-gpu configurations have microstutter Not just dual gpu cards

Looking at reviews, performance is very similar.
__________________Both have pros and cons. Two separate cards will OC better and have more available cooling options, but they will also take up more space and cost a little bit more money. If you haven't bought a motherboard yet, you could save yourself a bit by getting a P35 or P45 board over an X38/X48 and a single 4870X2.

I have had both, 2 4870's and now a 4870X2
__________________They score exactly the same in benches. At higher res (1920x1200 and above) there is a slight advantage to the X2 due to ram. also its cheaper you can add a second one. you only need two pci-e power connectors instead of 4 the fan actually works properly....

yea my vote goes for the HD 4870x2 for all the same reasons they gave (more ram @ higher res). my monitor needs an upgrade though lol... i'm adding another 4850 for folding purposes soon

All the reviews I saw when searching this same issue (almost) show that the X2 is a tiny little bit faster. This is more due to some memory chip controller and better than CF communication speeds. And for price I think it is a bit cheaper than 2 cards too.
But I went with 1 4870 and am amazingly happy.
