Hey all, Getting rdy to boot up new build. This is my first solo build. I few questions please if anybody can help.
__________________Im about noob as they come ![]() Ok on my sapphire 4870x2 I have a 6pin and a 8pin connector. I use both them right? Should I use install cd that came with video card then update drivers or should I install the newest driver like 8.9 right off? After I get up and running anything special I need to do to the 4870x2 like disable or enable anything? I have read a lot on card and see there is a heat problem, so should I just up the fan speed to help with this or should I install rivatuner 2.11? Any help tips or anything that will help with video card. I play games for hrs and I mean hrs 10 to 15hr at a time on my days off easy. Im a noob this is my 2nd build first solo one and any help what so ever please would be nice.. Thank you

Hi.
![]() Yes. Use both power connectors. You can use the Drivers that came with the card, or download 8.9. There is also a 8.10 It seems to be hit and miss. I have tried all but the 8.10 (soon), and currently I am using 8.9 with no issues (so far - still need to try out more games). Once you are up and running you will want to launch and configure the Catalyst Control Center (CCC). There will be an "OverDrive" menu wherein you can "unlock" the card. <edit> The first sentence below is incorrect...sorry 'bout that. RivaTuner will not function properly with this card, nor will ATI Tool. You can use AMD GPU Clock Tool, but I would use CCC first until you get a feel for the card. These cards run hot. If you are not going to use liquid cooling, then perhaps the Fan Mod would be helpful. Since you have long gaming-sessions, ensure that you have adequate airflow through your case. Have fun with it!

Definitely try the 8.10 RC2 drivers, I'm using them right now and they run great and the fan controller that was added to CCC is awesome. I have my 4870x2 currently at 40% fan when I am idling and get a temp of 44-45c. And I usually bump the fan up to 75% when I play games and load never goes past 65c (from what I have seen in Crysis)
Also when you get the card reapply the thermal paste, it helped drop the temps on my card. Should look like this once applied and smoothed out:

Cool Thank you Marin. On the reapply thermal paste. Was it hard taking the card apart or any trouble putting back together?

Here is a guide about how to control your fan with Rivatuner 2.11
http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1345181 Have tried it and it works really good. Here is a other guide using CCC. http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?...hlbnRodXNpYXN0 Have also tried it but rivatuner is better. Have also change my 2D mode coreclock and memoryclock to 450 and 300 so it runs cooler in non 3D mode (idle) by create an profil through CCC and change values in the XML file, working really great.

Not hard at all actually. All you need to do is remove all the screws from the RAM backplate, remove the screws from the two GPU cooler backplates. Then you just need to remove the two screws on the front of the PCI slot bracket and the two screws on the back of the card.
