A lot of times in the middle of game play frames will drop to maybe 2-3 per second, and twice now I hear the fan just shutoff. The game will quit and I get some error saying something is wrong with my graphics card drivers...

Sounds like the fan is shutting off, and the card is quitting the game so it doesn't overheat. Keep the case open when you're playing a game to see if that's what's happening.

Might be a faulty gpu. What's the ambient temperatures inside your case?
__________________What 4870 model do you have btw? Should also look into buying a secondary gpu cooler if it's a heat problem. You know, this could be a possibility but, check the pci-e connector on your psu. It might be a faulty pci-e plug from the psu. You should use another psu to test out the card, preferably something that's 650W+ if you have 1 4870.

Do you have good case airflow? Another option could be a bad fan or card maybe. If you have good airflow inside your case i would look into exchanging for another and see if that was your problem.

From what I've experienced with this exact same thing, with an X1800, X1900, 3870 and 4850, it is VPU Recover. The fans spin down for a second or two, turn back on, and the VPU Recover box is up in behind your app. If you can just alt tab and click Don't Send, you can keep doing what you were doing, as far as I know.

Do you have the latest drivers? If so you can manually set the fan speed and see if that works.
