Well considering the 8800GTX/Ultra & 9800GTX perform similarly to an HD4850, I'd think you'd definitely notice a difference going from an 8800GTS (G80) to HD4870.

VSync lowers your maximum frame rate to match your monitor's refresh rate (60Hz, or 60FPS on your typical LCD). It can reduce what is known as "tearing", or inconsistencies when rendering frames that occur when your video card is outputting a higher frame rate than your monitor's display capability. It is usually only recommended when you are consistently getting higher FPS than your monitor's refresh rate.

Allright good to know!

So for example in Far Cry 2 i got 45 fps in the bench, so should keep vSync disabled?

For benching I would leave it off. It can interfere with the maximum frame rate (I remember the FEAR benchmark where some people were wondering why they only got 60FPS max... turned out they had Vsync on, lol). Not sure if that's the case with FC2's bench though.

For actual gameplay, I would just leave it off if you're experiencing less than your monitor's refresh rate during the majority of the time. There would be really no point in keeping it on in such a situation.

If you're getting more than 60FPS the majority of the time, and are continually seeing the screen look as if you're getting two separate frames on each half (top and bottom), then you may want to try it out.

this is all true and all, but the main reason I said you need to turn VSYNC on is because I just bought a HD 4850, whipped out my FarCry2, maxed it out, put the on the 4XAA, and 1440x900 on Ultra High Settings, only to find I was getting a dismal 11FPS.

For some odd reason it struck me to try turning on VSYNC, even though I knew that its supposed to lower the actual performance.

To my surprise after turning VSYNC on, I am getting 45-55FPS on FarCry2.

I think the 4800 series cards really like the VSYNC turned on.

There is no way Vsync can improve your actual frame rate unless there is some sort of weird glitch (something wrong) with the game itself. Even then it wouldn't really be Vsync itself improving performance, it would be a glitch reducing performance.

No card "really likes" VSync turned on, based on the model. That makes no sense. Vsync merely puts frame rates down to your monitor's refresh - which has nothing to do with any specific model card.

What resolution? If you are just playing at 12whateverx10whatever and playing WOW mostly, you wont see much improvement between a G80 GTS and a 4870. Its just not worth upgrading.

However, because of the fact that you will get bored with WOW and eventually move onto more stimulating games, I'd say go ahead and grab the 4870. I have 2, I love em. =)
