Default 8800GTS to 4870?

Hey guys.
I am new to the board and am putting together a rig tomorrow or saturday. Parts are as follows:
9950 Black
8g(2x4gb) gskill ram
8800gts 640mb
750w pc power and cooling psu
thermaltake case
tuniq tower 120 cpu cooler
x-fi soundcard

I think that covers the basics. I will be running vista 64 bit. I play Crysis some, but not too much, COD4, and mostly WoW.

My main question is, I already have the 8800gts and have had it for a while but can sell it and get a 4870 for 180 (from someone local on craigslist). Is it worth the upgrade? How much will things improve from the 8800gts to the 4870? By the way the 4870 is the Visiontek 512mb version that goes new on newegg for around 260 I think?

Thanks for any and all input/opinions.

the 4870 will blow the 8800 GTS out of the water... you will see a large increase in performance... I say definitely go for it, as long as the Craigslist seller is legit...

4870 will be at least 30% faster and more with AA on. 8800GTS for those games is more then enough unless you don't plan on upgrading any time soon.

He is. I am meeting him Saturday in town and talked to him on the phone tonight. Hoping to get about 80-100 for my gts and pay 180 for the 4870 so the upgrade will only cost me about 100 bucks.

So I guess it's worth it, I am just kinda clueless on how much performance will improve.

The 4870 is this gen, while the 8800GTS is last gen. Right now ATI is doing all the right things and is on top. So go with the purchase of the 4870 (closely matches speeds of the top NVIDIA cards right now) and you will definetly be pleased with it's superior performance over the 8800 GTS!

Go here and see for yourself;

And yeah I won't be upgrading for a bit so nows the time if I am going to anytime soon. The wife knows I am throwing a comp together so the spending is justified. I try not to drop 300 or so every 6 months to a year for a vid card if I can keep from it. How long will the 4870 last me if I go that route?

depending on your level of gaming... if you like playing the more demanding games such as crysis, it will last for a good 1-2 years.... after that, it may not be able to handle the high end games at that time, especially when DX11 comes out next year

I made that exact upgrade, and it is totally worth it. I too had the older slow 640mb 8800 gts.
