I'm not a member of the 4xxx series yet, but have a couple of questions for those that may have come from the 38xx series to the 4850's..

Right now I'm running a AMD rig and a Intel rig. Each has a 3870 and a 3870x2 in them. I game on the AMD rig and it will play any game out there very well.

Is it worth the jump from these I have to a 4850 or a 4870?

Any of you that did come from the 38xx series, have you noticed a huge gain from the 38xx to the 4850?

I have also been looking at that 4850x2, but its cheaper to just buy 2 4850's and crossfire them...And it has that ugly blue PCB...

Thank you for your time..

I jumped from an 8800GT to my 4850, so that is pretty comparable to your situation. I noticed an improvement in benching and gaming, but I didn't test too in depth. According to the benches when the card was released, it was said that the 4850 had around a 20-25% improvement over an 8800GT/4850.

If you are happy with your cards at the moment though and are still able to play on higher settings, then there isn't that much to gain (atleast going from 3870x2 to a 4850).

But yes, I was very pleased when I upgraded my card.

I can't really say from a single card, but aside from benchmarks in Crossfire i can see a big increase in FPS. CF on my 4850s run MUCH smoother than my 3870s ever did.

I wish i could compare single vs single and how big of an upgrade it would be, but I've always run them in crossfire.

Thanks guys..... I'm just trying to justify spending the money on new cards or staying with what I have.,..

I'm going to try both 3870x2's in my AMD rig again and see how they do...

i went from a 3870 to a 4850,for the 3870 was a bit slow at 1680x1050 with AA,particularly in COD4.
most gains i have noticed are in crysis, since i gamed it a lot with my 3870.it is 15fps faster at 1280x1024 gpu benchmark and 50% faster at 1680x1050.
comparisons between a 877 core 3870 and a 770 core 4850 though.

as for By-Tor 's question. Personally I don't believe in dual gpu's solutions. Wether they are SLI, CF, X2 or GX2, they just don't show consistent results from one game to the other. I've also seen some benchmarks that show the 4850 defeat the 3870x2 (again, results depend on the game).
Still, jumping from 3870x2 to 4850 doesn't seem like a REALLY significant change. Personnally I upgraded from a geforce 8600gt so I REALLY felt it.
In your case I'd go for 4870.
