I currently own a Visiontek HD 4850, a card I love to death. I fell apon some money, and now am looking to run crossfire BUT am not sure what my options are.
So my question is, am i limited to just running 4850s, and if so, do they have to be the same brand? If im NOT limited to chipset, would getting a 4870 and running it in crossfire along with the 4850 work and be usefull?

You will have to get another 4850 to do crossfire. It doesn't, however, have to be the same brand.

No, you can't run different GPUs in crossfire (or SLI). However, you may use different branded cards, but if they are different clocks they will both be downclocked to the slower clock.

well now my question is, should i spend the 179 and run a second 4850 in xfire, OR spend the 199 and get the 4870? Would the two 4850's in xfire out-perform the 4870?

You can crossfire a 4800 series with another 4800 series card.
Be it a 4870x2, 4870, 4850x2 and 4850. I'm not real sure about using a 4830 in the mix.

Or just sell your 4850 and get a 4870X2

if u use a 4870 crossfire with 4850, the 4870 will become a 4850. So i say you buy 4870 and some games will work better with only the 4870 others with crossfire of the 2. In a few years, you'll upgrade and buy only one other 4870 and you will rule the worls with 4870 crossfire. Hope this helps
