I own a pair of GTX260 216 Cores in SLI on one of my systems. They are roughly in the same ballpark as the X2.
This is coming from a man known notoriously, up until recently, for being an Nvidia guy. i would listen to him on this. I agree, i have seen results that are just not believable to me. All of them are also on highly Nvidia optimized games.

Also price point could be a big factor here. ATI has not reduced the price on the 4870X2 1 penny since its release. Look what nvidia had to do to the 260 and 280's to stay afloat.

If the GTX295 has a clear advantage, all ATI has to do is reduce the cost of their card (and drop the 4850X2 accordingly). That should keep them in control of market share.
All ATI has to do is enable sideport and I'm sure the 4870 X2 will be neck in neck. I also suspect that if sideport is enabled CrossfireX will really see substantial gains and improvement. I think the GTX 295 are overhyped anyway and will be priced high.

Yeah. I'm not very impressive with the gtx295 even thought they did very well with some of the games which optimized for nvidia. In the other hand Ati hasn't enabled the sideport on the hd4870x2. I would get another hd4870 if I have the money.

and here is the diamond 4870X2 for $440

so no they are not cheaper.
I'm sorry, I didn't know that MIRs automatically worked for everyone!

As far as I'm concerned, that 4870X2 is $500.
